Finely grate half of the onion and mince one garlic clove. In a mixing bowl, combine the ground chicken, grated onion, minced garlic, egg, panko, grated parmesan, dried oregano, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined, then shape into small meatballs.
Heat half of the olive oil in a wide frying pan over medium-high heat. Brown the meatballs on all sides for about 5 minutes until golden, then transfer them to a plate.
Finely dice the remaining half of the onion and mince the remaining garlic cloves. Add the remaining olive oil to the pan and gently sauté the onion and garlic until translucent. Stir in tomato paste, canned tomatoes, dried oregano, salt, and pepper.
Carefully lower the browned meatballs into the tomato sauce. Cover with a lid and simmer gently over low heat for 12 to 15 minutes until the meatballs are thoroughly cooked through.
Roughly chop the fresh basil leaves and scatter them over the simmering meatballs just before serving.
